Gadhada II-54: Satsang Is the Greatest Spiritual Endeavor; A ‘Gokhar’; Profound Attachment

Nirupan

May 1954, Gondal. At the Akshar Deri, Yogiji Mahārāj had Vachanāmruts Gadhadā II-51, II-53 and II-54 read and said, “The jiva is not able to look at itself and think, ‘What am I like?’ It is ignorant in this way. Yet, it still finds faults in the actions of the Motā-Purush. It is the king of fools. Therefore, keep divyabhāv and nirdoshbhāv in even the most trivial of Satpurush’s actions. Such understanding is only possible if one develops ātmabuddhi towards the Satpurush.”

[Brahmaswarup Yogiji Mahārāj: 1/490]

Gunātitānand Swāmi said, “God is not pleased as much by other endeavors as he is by Satsang. Satsang is the extent of one’s goodwill towards God and the Sant. To attain it is rare.”

[Swāmini Vāto: 5/26]

Gunātitānand Swāmi said, “Where there is the great Sadhu, moral codes are observed, dharma is practiced and spiritual wisdom is attained. Also, where there is the Sadhu there are infinite virtues, and also God. As a result, the jiva becomes divine. In the Vachanāmrut, it is noted that God has said, ‘I am not as pleased by austerities, renunciation, yoga, observance of vows, donations or other endeavors as I am by the association of a Sadhu of complete inner purity.’ Having attained this satsang, the merits are limitless. Ajāmil was a grave sinner, but he met Sanakādik, bowed to them and said, ‘I will not be able to do anything.’ But sadhus are compassionate, so they named his son Nārāyan, and in this way he attained moksha.”

[Swāmini Vāto: 1/181]

September 1896 [Samvat 1952], Gadhadā. Bhagatji looked at one of the sādhus seated in the assembly, so the sādhu recited some Vachanāmruts by heart - Gadhadā I-54, Gadhadā II-54 and Gadhadā III-21. Having heard this, Bhagatji turned to Purushottamdās of Vaso and said, “This talk was about the ultimate goal.” He then added, “Ātmabuddhi towards the Ekāntik Sant of God is the unique endeavor for moksha. Shriji Mahārāj has given the key to moksha to such a Sant; therefore, that Sant is known as the gateway to moksha. Serve such a Sant by thought, word and deed, and perfect ekāntik dharma, but never fall into the habit of criticizing people. Previously, those who had negative thoughts towards the devotees of God have fallen from even the most exalted status.”

[Brahmawarup Shri Pragji Bhakta: 552]

Yogiji Mahārāj explained, “Shriji Mahārāj is present in Satsang through the Gunātit Sant. In Vachanāmrut Gadhadā II-54, Shriji Mahārāj has instructed one to maintain the four types of intellect (pujya-buddhi, tirth-buddhi, ātma-buddhi, and svatva-buddhi) towards the Ekāntik Sant of God. One who does not possess this understanding should be regarded as a bullock (‘go’) and a donkey (‘khar’) (Hence, the title ‘gokhar’).

“Once, sādhus from Muli arrived at the village of Khārvā. There were many devotees in the village who possessed the conviction of Akshar-Purushottam. They kept the murtis of Mahārāj and Gunātitānand Swāmi in their daily pujā. On seeing this, the sādhus said, ‘Why do you keep the image of Swāmi in your pujā?’

“The devotees were staunch and replied, ‘Swāmi, read Vachanāmrut Gadhadā II-54.’ After reading it, the devotees said, ‘We do not want to become like a bullock and a donkey; thus we keep the murti of Gunātitānand Swāmi along with Mahārāj’s.’ If one keeps the four types of intellect towards the Ekāntik Sadhu, Mahārāj becomes bound to them [God becomes bound by the devotion of the devotee].”

[Yogi Vāni: 25/85]

June 30, 1968, Gondal. During the afternoon discourse, Yogiji Mahārāj had Vachanāmrut Gadhadā II-54 read and said, “What is ātmabuddhi? To give a devotee of God your food. To eagerly follow any command that he gives. If one has ātmabuddhi, then he gains strength. One remains elated. His commands are followed. If you eat, does hunger go or remain?

“This Vachanāmrut Gadhadā II-54 relates to that. If one does not have such ātmabuddhi, one would be called a donkey or a bullock. If called that, he would be offended and would stop coming to the mandir. However, that is written in the [Shrimad] Bhāgwat. Other Vachanāmruts may be mastered or not, but if this one is, then that is sufficient. A horse rider keeps his focus on three things. Similarly, we should keep our focus on removing grains of sand from wheat. Listen to discourses and remove these grains of sand.”

[Brahmaswarup Yogiji Mahārāj: 5/120]

Yogiji Mahārāj said, “Gunātitānand Swāmi has explained in his spiritual discourses that maintaining ātmabuddhi is itself satsang. It is not the intention to disregard niyams, dharma, renunciation and detachment; however, ātmabuddhi is the prime factor. If one possesses ātmabuddhi, one will maintain loyalty; this is Swāmi’s principle.

“By God’s grace, one may be able to behold God’s form constantly and one’s status will increase among people, and they may offer prostrations. But without ātmabuddhi, Mahārāj has revealed that that is a shortcoming in a devotee. According to Vachanāmruts Gadhadā II-54 and Gadhadā III-11, one can experience everlasting peace without the need for samādhi only by maintaining ātmabuddhi. If a devotee is loyal and maintains ātmabuddhi in the Bhakta of God, this will be their last birth.”

Referring to Swāmini Vāt: 1/31.

[Yogi Vāni: 3/16]

Ātmabuddhi - The Synonym for Satsang

On Bhim Ekādashi day, Bālmukund Swami recited five Swāmini Vāto. The last one was Vāt 1/32: What is one to do with renunciation and detachment?... Only one who has profound association with the enlightened Sadhu of God is a satsangi.

Swāmi immediately picked up on this and said, “We read about ātmabuddhi every day, but when practiced when it is necessary, that is genuine - according to Gadhadā II-54. When Mulubhāi’s son’s hand was crushed (in the doorway), he screamed (because of his oneness with his son). Rājābhāi possessed that level of ātmabuddhi (for Satsang).

“As long as one does not experience joy seeing other devotees of God and the heart does not experience delight, then where is ātmabuddhi? If one has no feelings (for other devotees) yet sees the murti of God, so what!

“When someone came to Junāgadh, even the great ‘nand’ sadhus would stop them and say, ‘What is there? Only big black rocks.’ One would aid a devotee of God who is experiencing grief. Just as one is loyal to their son, one also serves the devotees of God. He takes on that burden...

“When does God and the Sant become pleased? Anuvrutti.

“If I was eating and Swāmi’s (Shāstriji Mahārāj’s) letter comes (to call him there), I would take the first train, not the second. That is why Shāstriji Mahārāj became pleased [with me]. His drashti fell on me. We three - Swāmi, Nirgun Swāmi, and I - traveled together. Because I pleased Swāmi, I experience peace in my heart. Even if there was illness in my body, so what?”

[Brahmaswarup Yogiji Mahārāj: 5/90]
