Kali is said to reside in gold...

Once, King Parikshit was travelling through a forest, where he saw a tragic scene. A cruel man in the guise of a king was beating a feeble bullock who was on the verge of dying. The bullock only had one leg, and the man was ready to break his last leg. King Parikshit became angry seeing such cruelty. He drew his sword and said, “Who are you to beat a bullock in my kingdom?” The bullock acquired speech and spoke in a gentle tone. The bullock’s speech indicated he possessed knowledge of the ātmā and dharma. Parikshit realized that this bullock is the manifest form of Dharmadev and the cruel man is Kali-yug. Up to now, the four pillars (legs) of the dharma of Satya-yug had remained unbroken: (1) Austerities, (2) Purity, (3) Compassion, and (4) Truth. However, when Satya-yug ended, the pillar of austerities broke. The end of Treta-yug meant purity ended. Compassion vanished with the end of Dwapar-yug. Now, only one pillar - Truth - remained, which the cruel man was trying to break.

The King raised his sword to kill Kali-yug, but the clever Kali fell at the king’s feet seeking refuge and said, “I am at your refuge.” Kings did not kill those who sought refuge in them, so Parikshit turned his sword away. He told Kali to leave his kingdom. Kali mournfully said, “Maharaj, you are the ruler of this whole earth. Where can I go? Give me some place in your kingdom where I can stay. I will not go elsewhere.” Parikshit thought and said, “I give you four places where you can reside.” Kali replied, “Very well. Tell me the four places.” Parikshit said:

Abhyarthitastadā tasmai sthānāni kalaye dadau |
Dyūtam pān striyaha sūnā yatrādharmashchaturvidhaha ||
Punashcha yāchamānāya jātarūpamadātprabhuhu |
Tato’nṛutam madam kāmam rajo vairam cha panchamam ||

Meaning: When Kali asked Parikshit for four places where he could dwell, Parikshit named four places of immoral conduct where he was allowed: where there is (1) gambling, (2) drinking of alcohol, (3) adultery, and (4) violence. Kali asked for one more place, so Parikshit gave him one final place: gold - the source of immoral conduct.

This fifth place - gold - that Kali asked for opened the door to five other places automatically. (1) Anrutam - immorally acquired wealth (and dishonesty will follow); (2) Madam - arrogance; (3) Kamam - adultery; (4) Rajah - anger that evolves from rajogun; and (5) Vairam - enmity. These five other places were acquired by Kali; and Kali started to dwell in these places.
