Gadhada I-74: Understanding Is Measured in Times of Hardship

Prasang

On January 25, 1974, Pramukh Swāmi Mahārāj embarked on his first trip abroad in the morning from Mumbai. At exactly 10:15am, the Air India airplane “Gauri-Shankar” took off and disappeared in the sky. The airplane landed in Nairobi where many devotees gathered to receive Swāmishri with garlands. Swāmishri and the accompanying sadhus had not even deboarded when an announcement was made: “Pramukh Swāmi will return back to India. The rest can deboard.” Hearing the announcement, Swāmishri’s facial expression did not change one bit. He simply said, “If that is Bhagwān’s will.” However, how can the other sadhus get off the plane without Swāmishri?

A few minutes later, another announcement was made: “Pramukh Swāmi and his party should all return to India.” Laughingly Swāmishri said, “This is Mahārāj’s wish.” All the other sadhus were astonished. Disappointed, they all sat back in their seats and became silent. Only Swāmishri was equipoised. Kothāri Swāmi (Bhaktipriya Swāmi), tasked with keeping the journal of the trip, asked Swāmishri to write something in his diary. Swāmishri wrote: “Whatever happens is according to Mahārāj’s and Bapa’s (Yogi Bapa’s) wish. Therefore, remain joyful. Never feel sorrowful. Offer bhakti to Mahārāj believing one’s self as Akshar – this way, no misery will be experienced.”

After returning to Mumbai, in the morning of the next day, Swāmishri explained Gadhadā I-74: “We should believe [Mahārāj] is kartā and hartā. We believe him to be kartā (creative powers or power of giving) but have difficulty accepting his power of hartā (destructive powers or power of taking away). When incidents like this arise, we question why he did that. Why did he do it? But when everything happens according to his will, why should we experience grief? We should feel delight in every way. Whatever happens is for our own benefit… no matter what happens (even if it seems contrary to us). We should understand it is Mahārāj’s will and be glad… Perhaps after entering Nairobi, we were going to be hassled. Rather, it is better we came back alive and well. We are back alive and well and we are happy! If they [Nairobi officials] have to say something, they’ll say it; but what can they take from us? We should remain worry-free and experience bliss… Others may talk big about their knowledge but when incidents like this happen, we realize their actual state.”

In explaining this Vachanāmrut, Swāmishri solidified everyone’s understand of Bhagwān’s will. Everyone became elated with the bliss of listening to Swāmishri and forgot the turmoil they experience for having to return from Nairobi.
