Gadhada III-21: A Golden Thread; Dharma Possesses the Same Eminence as Bhakti

Nirupan

September 12, 1974. Today was Ekadashi so everyone observed a total fast. Therefore, Swamishri started discoursing on ‘the golden thread’ Vachanamrut right after his puja:

“One who does for his self has no association with God. One who does to please God is one who has an association with God. One who does not have expectations of the fruit (of his karmas or prayers) is one who has an association with God. If one observes dharma to please God, then that becomes bhakti. That level of dharma and bhakti are the same. When Maharaj went to wed Dada Khachar, they were to feed the guests. That day was the Ekadashi fast. However, Maharaj said, ‘Everyone eat.’ Therefore, everyone ate. Since they obeyed his command to please him, it became bhakti. If we observe from an external perspective, feeding others and celebrating samaiyās may seem like pravrutti (activity); however, it is actually nivrutti. On the contrary, one who sits in the corner (and does nothing) is pravrutti.

“We should understand that ‘aksharmuktas from Akshardham are sitting in the sabhā.’ We should apply the perception of divinity (divyabhā) in everyone and engage in our tasks. If one does not have gnān, then he will certainly become discouraged. His mind will fall back. As long as one calls him and gives him attention, he will do his sevā; however, if we were to be insulted in Satsang or encounters some misery of the body, then he will leave; just like a fly drowns in water. Maharaj says, ‘We do not abandon him.’ (He leaves or falls back from Satsang on his own because of insults, bodily misery, etc.) The ocean does not say, ‘Dead body, leave.’ (A dead body washes ashore on its own. Meaning, one who lacks understanding will not be able to sustain himself in Satsang.) Therefore, we should identify our self as the ātmā and practice satsang.”
