Gadhada III-18: The Degeneration of Worldly Desires

Nirupan

June 6, 1962. Mumbai. In the morning discourse, Yogiji Mahārāj said, “How should one know if vāsanā has degenerated? A fourth of the newspaper or a fourth of one Vachanāmrut - if one reads the newspaper instead, leaving the Vachanāmrut untouched. Do not do that. If guests came to Mādhā Patel’s (from Mojidad) house, he would say, ‘Let’s go to kathā. If you do not want to come, here is the cot and here is the pot. Sleep.’ How could he sleep on his own? He has to go to kathā against his will. That is called vāsanā becoming degenerate. If one were to earn 10,000 in the bazaar, should one go there or come to Shāstriji Mahārāj. One who has thoughts of God is strong. Everything else would not be a priority. If one is forcefully supported in their social affairs (i.e. he does just enough to get by), he is free of vāsanā. Others are entrapped in their social affairs on their own; or if one cannot leave their social affairs even if the Motā-Purush says to leave it - they all have vāsanā.”
