Sarangpur-15: Obstinate, Mediocre and Mature Gopis

Summary

  1. A devotee who has deep love for God but lacks ātmā-realisation and vairāgya:
  1. His bhakti may look extremely appealing outwardly, but it is extremely inferior.
  2. When he comes in contact with bad company [kusang], then his intellect will become polluted; he will constantly crave vishays; and his love for God will not remain.
  1. A devotee who has deep love for God along with ātmā-realisation and vairāgya:
  1. He may not seem outwardly enthusiastic for the darshan, touch, etc., of God’s form; however, the roots of his love are very deep.
  2. His love for God will not diminish even due to influence of bad company.
  1. One who has thoroughly realised God’s greatness, then due to the power of that realisation, the virtues of ātmā-realisation and vairāgya naturally flourished in his heart.
  2. The three types of gopis:
  1. Obstinate:
  1. They would become upset with God.
  2. They would speak harsh words to God that one would feel they will fall from the path of God.
  1. Mediocre:
  1. They would never become angry with God.
  2. They would not speak harsh words to God.
  3. Using their shrewdness, they would employ cunning ploys to conceal their selfishness from others and do whatever they please while also doing whatever pleases God.
  1. Mature:
  1. They would do only that which pleases God.
  2. They would not do whatever they please using shrewdness to satisfy their selfishness.
  3. Their only wish is to please God.
  4. They would not become angry at or jealous of the other gopis.
  5. They would not behave in any way that would displease God.
