Sarangpur-4: Wisdom in Discerning between Ātmā and Non-Ātmā

Summary

  1. Distinction between the ātmā and the non-ātmā [i.e. the physical body]:
  1. The ātmā and the physical body are distinct.
  2. One should believe one’s self is the ātmā and none of the characteristics of the physical body apply to his ātmā.
  3. After becoming totally free of worldly desires, one should believe oneself to be chaitanya and contemplate upon Purushottam Bhagwān.
  1. If one has not developed this firm distinction, he may think of the ātmā all day, but if he believes himself to be the body and fantasises about women, even for just a moment, then all of his thoughts are futile.
  2. What happens if one dies without becoming totally free of worldly desires?
  1. The fate of a devotee of God:
  1. He will attain the realms of the deities, which are described as comparable to naraks before the abode of God in the Moksh-dharma, a portion of the Mahābhārat [but he does not enter the cycles of births and deaths].
  2. After indulging in pleasures in the realm of deities, he will become a human again and attain God’s abode if he does bhakti.
  1. The fate of a non-devotee: He will go to Yampuri or re-enter the cycles of births and deaths.
  1. Understanding a devotee of God should keep:
  1. If anything dies, it is this body; but I am the ātmā.
  2. One should not become discouraged seeing the force of worldly desires.
  3. Joyfully worship God.
  4. Remain vigilant in trying to eradicate one’s desires for worldly pleasures.
  5. Maintain absolute faith in the words of God and the Sant of God.
