Gadhada I-28: A Smouldering Log; Progressing and Regressing

Nirupan

April 26, 1970, Mombasa. Yogiji Mahārāj was staying at the house of Ravibhāi Pandyā. In the afternoon at 1:20pm, Yogiji Mahārāj explained Vachanāmrut Gadhadā I-28, “One should remain as the smallest of the smallest. Once, Gunātitānand Swāmi was travelling by horse. A Muslim had come with the intention of killing him. He asked, ‘Are you the great one?’ Gunātitānand Swāmi replied, ‘No, only God is great.’ Because Swami behaved as a servant of servants, the Muslim instantly bowed before him.

Dādā Khāchar remained humble, so Mahārāj stayed with him. Jivā Khāchar tried to become great, so he fell.

“What is peace? Light in the heart (i.e. gnān that allows one to remain tranquil).

“What does it mean to attain extreme greatness? One who attains a seat and cusions (i.e. a great status)? No. One who remains as a servant of servants.”

[Brahmaswarup Yogiji Maharaj: 6/178]

January 21, 1964, Mumbai. In the afternoon, explaining Vachanāmrut Gadhadā I-28, Yogiji Mahārāj said, “When one perceives flaws in others, he smolders (like a half-burnt log) and eventually leaves Satsang. When you have free time, understand this Vachanāmrut. Free yourselves from other tasks and read the Vachanāmrut.

“Flaws are inherently present in people, but do not look at these and only look at their virtues. All sādhus are great, all devotees are great, and all are upāsaks of Swāminārāyan! We are all one and not different.

“Oh! How fortunate I am to be in Satsang. If I had fallen into bad company, what would have happened to me? If one perceives virtues in this way, then he becomes great. True greatness is when we experience peace in our hearts, not by attaining worldly status. If one attains the former type of greatness, he will never fall.”

[Brahmaswarup Yogiji Maharaj: 3/583]

July 28, 1977, London. Today, Pramukh Swami Maharaj explained Vachanamrut Gadhada I-28, “The work of God and the Sant never stops. By perceiving faults in others, we load the bullock cart with deficiencies and bring it to ourselves. When one behaves as the ātmā, then one develops a feeling of ‘vasudhaiva kutumbakam’ (the whole world is one family). Even if we offer 100,000 pounds to God, we should believe we are nothing. And if someone else offers 5 pounds, we should see the good in them and understand their greatness. As we continue to practice satsang, the more we benefit. What is that benefit? To increasingly understand the greatness of the young and the old. Then, one achieves greatness. What is greatness? When one receives the rājipo of God and the Sant.”

[Brahmaswarup Pramukh Swami Maharaj: 3/371]
