Gadhada II-37: Eradicating One’s Innate Natures; Even a Person Possessing Gnān Behaves According to His Nature

Nirupan

March 30, 1970, Mwanza, Tanzania. At 1:30pm, Yogiji Mahārāj had Vachanāmrut Gadhadā II-37 read and said, “There are three superintendent vices: obstinacy, ego and jealousy. These three are the greatest vices that lead to one’s downfall from the path of liberation. Other vices do not make one fall from liberation. One may have other major or minor natures - eating and drinking, oversleeping, etc.; however, only these three present an obstacle to liberation. People may have differing levels of matsar, however, it does not detract one from liberation. The three who falsely attributed these three vices to Shriji Mahārāj fell from Satsang. One who becomes obstinate also becomes egotistic. How did Faibā falter? Through obstinacy. Alaiyā Khāchar fell from ego and Jivā Khāchar fell from jealousy. One should have a straightforward nature and follow every instruction of the Motā-Purush. Such people will not fall from liberation. One who is forced to renounce the whims of one’s mind and takes offense will fall one day. Swabhāvs should be eradicated.

“This is an essential Vachanāmrut. The essence of what is to be understood is that one should eradicate their base natures. One should not keep obstinacy, ego and jealousy.

“Ishānand was a brahmachāri in Junāgadh. A pārshad once asked Ishānand, ‘Kindly let me know if you see any vice in me.’ He had a habit of dozing off. Once, he dozed off in the assembly and his head touched the ground. Swāmi said in the assembly, ‘Why are you dozing off?’ The pārshad took offense to this, thinking, ‘He reprimanded me in sabhā? He should have told me privately.’ Thus, he got angry with Swāmi. His nature of dozing off did not go away. If one truly desires liberation, one will renounce one’s nature. If one is not eager for liberation, he will be offended in every small instance.

“We read the Vachanāmrut every day; however, when the time comes, we are unable to put it into practice. When needed most, the milk sours. (When the knowledge of the Vachanāmrut needs to be applied, we forget it.)”

[Brahmaswarup Yogiji Mahārāj: 6/118]
