Gadhada III-17: The Story of Bharatji

Āshābhāi, Ishwarbhāi, and Motibhāi jointly owned property and managed its affairs. One day, they went for Shāstriji Mahārāj’s samāgam from Purushottampurā to Radhu. In Purushottampurā, Āshābhāi had built a new bungalow for their residence and storage of cotton, grains, and heaps of other items. In Samvat 1985, even during an unfavorable year, he had stored 600 maunds of cotton, 700 maunds of chickpeas, 1000 maunds of wheat, and other items to sell.

One night, his middle son Ramanbhāi lit a match while playing and threw it to the ground. It fell near the heap of cotton, lighting it, and eventually, the entire bungalow on fire. The storage and the bungalow were reduced to ashes.

The news reached everyone in Radhu, but Āshābhāi’s facial expression did not change one bit. Shāstriji Mahārāj asked Ishwarbhāi and Motibhāi to go to Purushottampurā to check if anything was saved. They observed that nothing remained from the fire. Since the food also burned away, they brought khichadi from Radhu and served everyone. (Āshābhāi’s family had escaped the bungalow before it burnt down.)

Motibhāi returned to Radhu. Shāstriji Mahārāj asked if anything was saved. Motibhāi replied with folded hands, “Bapa, nothing survived. We had to fetch khichadi from Radhu last night to feed everyone.” Motibhāi’s eyes teared up.

Swāmishri patted his back to console Motibhāi. Motibhāi said, “Swāmi, we served for ten years in Purushottampurā, yet our fortune did not turn around.”

Swāmishri said, “Your sins have been burnt away. From now on, everything will be better.”

Motibhāi asked again with folded hands, “Swāmi, we have been in your company for many years now, yet we still have sins remaining?”

Swāmishri laughed and answered, “For Bhagwān’s ekāntik bhakta, to have affection or desires for anything other than Bhagwān is a sin (Gadhada III-17). By burning the bungalow, Shriji Mahārāj has taught you sānkhya-gnān. Now, even if your wealth increases, because you have sānkhya-gnān, you will not be attached to it.”

આશાભાઈ, ઈશ્વરભાઈ તથા મોતીભાઈ એ ત્રણેયની જમીનનો ભેગો વહીવટ હતો. એક વાર તેઓ શાસ્ત્રીજી મહારાજનો સમાગમ કરવા પોતાના ગામ પુરુષોત્તમપુરાથી એક ગાઉ દૂર રઢુ આવ્યા હતા. આશાભાઈએ રહેવા તથા કપાસ, અનાજ વગેરેના ગંજ ભરવા માટે નવીન આલીશાન બંગલો બનાવ્યો હતો. સંવત ૧૯૮૫ના આ વર્ષે વિષમ દેશકાળ છતાં છસો મણ કપાસ, સાતસો મણ ચણા, અને એક હજાર મણ ઘઉં તથા બીજી પરચૂરણ વસ્તુઓ વેંચાણ માટે પોતાના આ બંગલામાં સંઘરી હતી.

એક સાંજે તેમના વચલા પુત્ર રમણભાઈએ દીવા પ્રગટાવતી વખતે રમતમાં, સળગેલી દીવાસળી ફેંકી. પાસે પડેલા કપાસનાં ગંજમાં આ દીવાસળી પડી અને બંગલા સહિત બધો માલ-સામાન ભસ્મિભૂત થઈ ગયો.

આ સમાચાર રઢુમાં સૌને મળ્યા પણ આશાભાઈના મુખની રેખા પણ ન ફરકી. પછી શાસ્ત્રીજી મહારાજે ઈશ્વરભાઈ અને મોતીભાઈને પુરુષોત્તમપુરા મોકલ્યા. ત્યાં જઈને તેમણે જોયું તો કાંઈ બચ્યું નહોતું. પછી રઢુથી મણ ખીચડી મંગાવી સૌને જમાડ્યા.

મોતીભાઈ રઢુ પહોંચ્યા એટલે શાસ્ત્રીજી મહારાજે પૂછ્યું, “કેટલું બચ્યું છે?”

ખૂબ જ ધીરજ રાખી મોતીભાઈએ હાથ જોડી કહ્યું, “બાપા! કાંઈ બચ્યું નથી. ઊલટું, કાલ રાત્રે મણ ખીચડી લાવ્યા ત્યારે સૌ જમ્યાં.” આટલું બોલ્યા ત્યાં તેમની આંખમાં ઝળઝળિયાં ભરાઈ ગયાં.

સ્વામીશ્રીએ તેમનો વાંસો થાબડી ધીરજ આપી. પછી મોતીભાઈએ કહ્યું, “સ્વામી! દસ વર્ષ પરાની સેવા કરી, પણ પરાની દશા વળી નહીં.”

સ્વામીશ્રીએ તેમને સાંત્વન આપ્યું અને કહ્યું, “તમારાં તમામ પાપ બળી ગયાં. હવે સારું થશે.”

મોતીભાઈએ હાથ જોડી પૂછ્યું, “સ્વામી! આપના સંબંધમાં આટલાં વર્ષોથી આવ્યા પછી પણ પાપ રહ્યાં હશે ખરાં?”

ત્યારે સ્વામીશ્રીએ હસીને ઉત્તર આપ્યો, “ભગવાનના એકાંતિક ભક્તને તો ભગવાન સિવાય બીજે ઠેકાણે પ્રીતિ કે વાસના રહે તે જ પાપ કહેવાય. (વચનામૃત ગઢડા અંત્ય ૧૭) બંગલો બળી ગયો તેમાં સાંખ્યજ્ઞાન મહારાજે કરાવી દીધું. હવે સંપત્તિ વધશે તો પણ સાંખ્યજ્ઞાન થયું છે એટલે વાસના નહિ રહે.”
