Gadhada II-41: A Bone in the Form of Egotism

Nirupan

April 6, 1959, Dāngarā. After completing his morning routine, Yogiji Mahārāj lucidly explained Vachanāmruts Gadhadā II-41 and Gadhadā II-44 in detail by saying, “The eminent devotee Kuberbhāi of Bhāvnagar would say that when we go to the mandir, does Thākorji welcome us to the mandir? Despite this, we maintain divinity in Thākorji. In the same way, if a sādhu ignores us, at least consider him to be like a deity! If the Satpurush does not call us, we may not perceive faults in the Sant; however, a doubt still crosses one’s mind. However, one should not doubt and maintain divinity by thinking: It is a good thing that [the Sant] does not rebuke us. But if he did rebuke us and we maintain divinity, then ego can be eradicated. Disregarding those of a lower status and looking after those with a higher status amounts to manushyabhāv.

“One may be so detached that he would not keep a wooden peg in his possession; yet, if he finds faults in others, then his renunciation is in vain. Of what use is that renunciation? Therefore, [Gunātitānand] Swāmi used to say, ‘It is acceptable if you can’t perform austerities, but one should not find faults.’ However much others eat, never perceive faults. One may fast for five consecutive days without water, but their ego would inflate by thinking, ‘Oh, see how much penance I am performing.’ What is the point of that? So what if someone eats heavily three times a day, but if they maintain divinity in others even if rebuked, then ego is said to be eradicated. Mahārāj calls such a devotee free of ego.

“Ego has many ‘customers’. Who can we give it to and who not? If one thinks: ‘My intellect is 1.25 shers’, that means he thinks someone else’s intellect is 0.75 shers. Who would bow to whom (if everyone thinks they are more intelligent than others)? No one would be happy.

“Normally, everyone talks about humility. However, one’s humility is tested when the time comes. Therefore, Mahārāj advises all to associate [with Satsang]. True association is defined as maintaining divinity in one another and not finding faults in others while staying together.”
