અગ્નિદેવ
શાસ્ત્રોમાં આવતાં પાત્રો
અગ્નિ એ પંચમહાભૂતમાંના તેજ નામના ત્રીજા મહાભૂતના અધિષ્ઠાતા દેવ છે. દક્ષ પ્રજાપતિની સોળ કન્યાઓમાંથી સ્વાહા નામની કન્યા તેમનાં પત્ની હતાં. અગ્નિને બ્રહ્મદેવે પૂર્વ અને દક્ષિણ દિશાની વચ્ચેનું આધિપત્ય આપેલું. તેથી આ દિશા આગ્નેયી દિશા કહેવાય. અગ્નિને જ્યારે અજીર્ણ થયું ત્યારે બ્રહ્માજીના કહેવાથી અને શ્રીકૃષ્ણ તથા અર્જુનની સંમતિથી તેને ખાંડવવન બાળ્યું તેના બદલામાં અર્જુનને દિવ્ય રથ અને ગાંડિવ ધનુષ્ય આપ્યાં તથા શ્રીકૃષ્ણને વજ્રનાભ ચક્ર અને કૌમોદકી ગદા આપ્યાં. તેઓ દેવોને યજ્ઞભાગ પહોંચાડે છે.

Agni is the presiding deity of tej, the third of the five mahābhuts (prithvi, jal, tej, vāyu, and ākāsh). Of the 16 daughters of Daksha Prajāpati, he was married to Swāhā. Brahmadev made Agni the prevailing deity of the the Southeast direction. Therefore, southeast is also known as Āgneya. When Agni suffered from indigestion, Brahmāji told him to burn the Khāndav forest. Krishna and Arjun consented. In return, he gifted Arjun a divine chariot and the Gāndiv bow. He gave Krishna the Vajranābh discus and Kaumodaki mace. Agni is responsible for distributing the merits of yagna sacrifices to the deities.
