અવતારો
કૂર્મ એ વિષ્ણુના મુખ્ય દશ અવતારોમાંનો બીજો અવતાર છે. તે તત્ત્વતઃ ઈશ્વરચૈતન્ય છે. ઈશ્વરચૈતન્યમાં પરબ્રહ્મ પુરુષોત્તમનારાયણના અનુપ્રવેશથી આ અવતાર થાય છે.
એક વખત દુર્વાસાના શાપને લીધે દેવો તેજહીન, કાંતિહીન ને લક્ષ્મીહીન બની ગયા. બલિએ સ્વર્ગ પર ચડાઈ કરી અને દેવોનો પરાજય થયો. દેવોએ ભગવાન વિષ્ણુને પ્રાર્થના કરી. ભગવાને મંદરાચલ પર્વતથી ક્ષીરસાગરનું મંથન કરવાનો ઉપાય બતાવ્યો. દેવોએ દાનવોની સહાયથી મંદરાચલ પર્વતને વાસુકી નાગરૂપી દોરડું બાંધી મંથનનો આરંભ કર્યો. પર્વત ડૂબવા લાગ્યો. તે વખતે ભગવાન કાચબારૂપે અવતર્યા. તેમની પીઠ પર મંદરાચલ મૂકી મંથન કર્યું અને તેમાંથી અમૃત નીકળ્યું. તેનાથી દેવોનો વિજય થયો. ભગવાનનો આ અવતાર કૂર્મ કે કચ્છ અવતાર તરીકે ઓળખાયા છે. આ અવતાર ચૈત્ર વદ પડવાને રોજ થયો હતો.

Kurma is the second of the ten main avatārs of Vishnu. In terms of the five eternal entities, Kurma is of the ishwar entity, which is capable of incarnation when Parabrahma Purushottam Narayan enters the ishwar.
Once, due to Durvāsā’s curse, the devas lost their luster, radiance, and wealth. Bali attacked the Swarg-lok and defeated the devas. The devas prayed to Vishnu who told them to churn the Kshir-Sāgar (ocean of milk). The devas and dānavs together churned the ocean with help from Vāsukināg as the rope and Mandarāchal mountain. The mountain was becoming lodged in the ocean, however. So, God incarnated as a turtle to hold the mountain on its shell, allowing the devas and dānavs to churn the ocean and acquire amrut. The devas drank the amrut and defeated the dānavs.
