માંધાતા રાજા
શાસ્ત્રોમાં આવતાં પાત્રો
ઇક્ષ્વાકુ કુળના રાજા યુવનાશ્વ નિઃસંતાન હતા. પુત્રપ્રાપ્તિ માટે તેમણે ઇન્દ્ર દેવનો યજ્ઞ કરાવ્યો. યજ્ઞ સમયે એક વખત રાત્રે તરસ લાગતાં વેદી ઉપર રાખેલું અભિમંત્રિત પાણી ભૂલથી પીતાં તેને ગર્ભ રહ્યો. પૂર્ણ કાળે તેની કૂખ ચીરીને ગર્ભ બહાર નીકળ્યો. હવે આ રડતા બાળકને દૂધ કોણ પીવડાવશે? ત્યાં જ ઇન્દ્ર પ્રગટ થયા અને પોતાની તર્જની આંગળી બાળકના મોંમાં નાખી તૃપ્ત કર્યો તેથી તેનું નામ માંધાતા પડ્યું. (માં ધાતા એટલે મને ધાવ્યો) તેમને ત્રણ પુત્રો અને પચાસ પુત્રીઓ હતાં. આ પચાસ પુત્રીઓ સૌભરી ઋષિને પરણાવી હતી. તેઓ ચક્રવર્તી રાજા હતા. પોતાના રાજ્યામાં બાર વર્ષ દુકાળ પડ્યો ત્યારે તેમણે પોતાના તપોબળથી વૃષ્ટિ કરેલી. તેમણે સો અશ્વમેધ અને સો રાજસૂય યજ્ઞ કર્યા હતા.

King Yuvanāsva of the Ikshvāku dynasty was childless. He commenced a yagna of Indra to obtain a child. One night, he became thirsty and mistakenly drank the consecrated water of the yagna. He became pregnant from drinking the water. Later in the pregnancy, the child was delivered by excision of his abdomen. The question of who would breastfeed the child arose. At this moment, Indra appeared and put his finger in the child’s mouth, which satisfied the child. Hence, the child was called Māndhātā. He had three sons and 50 daughters. The 50 daughters married Saubhari Rishi. He was a chakravarti king. When his kingdom suffered from 12 years of drought, he used the merits of his penance and made it rain. He had performed 100 Ashwamedh yagnas and 100 Rājasuya yagnas.
