વાયુદેવ
શાસ્ત્રોમાં આવતાં પાત્રો
વાયુદેવ એ પંચમહાભૂતમાંના વાયુ મહાભૂતના અધિષ્ઠાતા દેવ છે. કલ્પના આરંભે બ્રહ્મદેવે તેમને પશ્ચિમ અને ઉત્તર દિશા વચ્ચેનું આધિપત્ય આપ્યું હતું. એટલે તે દિશાનું નામ વાયવ્ય પડેલું તે હજુ પણ ચાલે છે. વળી, તેમણે સીતાનું નિર્દોષપણું જાહેર કર્યું હતું. તેમનાથી કુંતીને પેટે ભીમસેન જન્મ્યો હતો. વાયુમાં સ્પર્શ, સંખ્યા, પરિમાણ, પૃથકૃત્વ, સંયોગ, વિભાગ, પરત્વ, અપરત્વ, સંસ્કાર એમ નવ ગુણો છે. વૃક્ષાદિકને કંપાવવાપણું, તૃણાદિક ભેળા કરવાપણું અને શબ્દ, સ્પર્શ, ગંધ, રૂપ, રસ એ પાંચ વિષયને શ્રોત્રાદિક પાંચ ઇન્દ્રિયો પ્રત્યે પમાડવાપણું અને સર્વ ઇન્દ્રિયોનું આત્માપણું એ વાયુનું લક્ષણ છે.

Vāyudev is the presiding deity of wind, the fourth of the five mahābhuts ((prithvi, jal, tej, vāyu, and ākāsh). During the beginning of the kalp, Brahmā made him the prevailing deity of the direction between north and west (i.e. Northwest). Therefore, that direction is known as Vāyavya. Vāyudev had announced Sitāji’s innocence. Bhimsen (the third Pāndava brother) was born to Kunti from Vāyudev. The characteristics of vāyu are to make trees shake, gather leaves, and carry the panch-vishays to their respective indriyas. It is also the vital force of all the indriyas, as according to Vachanamrut Gadhada I-12.
