પ્રસંગ
(૧) જ્યાં લગી જક્ત જંજાળ ઉરમાં ખરો
૧૯૮૦માં પ્રમુખસ્વામી મહારાજ અમેરિકાના વિચરણમાં હતા. સ્વામીશ્રીને ડાબી આંખે દેખાતું બંધ થઈ રહ્યું હતું. બોસ્ટનમાં તાત્કાલિક ડૉ. હચિન્સનને બતાવવામાં આવ્યું. તેમના કહેવા પ્રમાણે તાત્કાલિક મોતિયાના ઑપરેશનની જરૂર હતી. જો બે-ત્રણ દિવસ લંબાય તો પણ ઝામર થવાનો સંભવ હતો. ઑપરેશનની તારીખ નક્કી થઈ. સ્વામીશ્રી તપાસ પછી ન્યૂયોર્ક પહોંચી ગયા હતા.
એ દરમ્યાન બોસ્ટનથી ડૉ. હચિન્સનનો ફોન આવ્યો કે, “આપની ઑપરેશનની બધી વ્યવસ્થા થઈ ગઈ છે, પણ આપે જે પુરુષ નર્સ માટે માગણી કરી છે, તે શક્ય બને તેમ નથી. કેમ કે બે પુરુષ નર્સ છે. ને બંને એક મહિના સુધી ‘બુક’ છે.”
અમે કંઈ વિચાર કરીએ તે પહેલાં ડૉ. હચિન્સને પોતાની રીતે ઉપાય કાઢતાં કહ્યું, “ઑપરેશન માટે સ્વામીશ્રીને ઍનેસ્થેસિયા આપીએ, પછી તો બેભાન અવસ્થામાં હોય, ત્યારે કોઈ સ્ત્રી નર્સ આવે તો ચાલે? સ્વામીશ્રી જાગે તે પહેલાં તો તે જતાં રહેશે!” મેં ફોન ઉપર જ ઇન્કાર કર્યો ને કહ્યું, “એ કોઈપણ સંજોગોમાં ન ચાલે. અમારા નિયમ આ બાબતે બહુ જ સ્પષ્ટ છે, ને કડક છે.”
આ ઉત્તર સાંભળી એ સુહૃદયી ડૉક્ટરે ફરી પુરુષનર્સ માટે તપાસ આદરી. હું ફોન મૂકી સ્વામીશ્રી નજીક આવ્યો. ત્યારે સ્વામીશ્રીએ પૂછ્યું, “શું વાત થઈ?” મેં બધી વાત કરી.
ત્યારે સ્વામીશ્રી કહે, “તમે શું જવાબ આપ્યો?”
મેં કહ્યું કે, “એ કોઈપણ સંજોગોમાં ન ચાલે... બેભાન અવસ્થામાં પણ નહીં.”
સ્વામીશ્રી એકદમ બોલી ઊઠ્યા, “સુષુપ્તિમાં પણ ન ચાલે. આ પ્રમાણે આપણી મર્યાદા ને વ્યવસ્થા પ્રમાણે જો ન થતું હોય તો આપણે ઑપરેશન નથી કરાવવું!”
સ્વામીશ્રીની આ મક્કમતા એટલી બધી હતી કે આંખ જાય તો વાંધો નહીં, શ્રીજીમહારાજે આપેલા નિયમમાં ફેરફાર ન થવો જોઈએ!
મુક્તાનંદ સ્વામીની પંક્તિ યાદ આવી ગઈ: ‘નિષ્કામી તે નારાયણ રૂપ છે...’ શ્રીજીમહારાજે પણ વચનામૃત ગઢડા મધ્ય ૬૧માં ત્યાગીમાં મોટેરો પણ તેને જ કહ્યો છે કે જે દેશ-વિદેશમાં જઈ ને કંચન-કામિનીનો ત્યાગ રાખે... સ્વામીશ્રીની નિયમદ્રઢતાનાં અહીં વિશિષ્ટ દર્શન થયાં....

Prasang
(1) Jyā lagī jakta janjāḷ urmā kharo
During his 1980 tour of America, Swamishri had been experiencing difficulty in seeing for some time. He has gone totally blind in the left eye. An ophthalmic surgeon, Dr. Hutchinson, was consulted in Boston. He advised an immediate cataract operation. A delay would carry the serious risk of Swamishri losing his sight forever. With the date for the operation fixed, Swamishri returned to New York.
When Swamishri was in New York, Dr. Hutchinson phoned from Boston regarding the arrangements for the operation. He explained that everything was fine except for one thing – there were no male nurses available. The two he did know of were booked for the whole month.
Dr. Hutchinson put forward a solution himself. He suggested, “When Swamishri is under anesthesia, he’ll be unconscious. Then there will be no problem with female nurses there? They’ll be gone before Swamishri regains consciousness.”
I made matters absolutely clear on the phone. “I’m sorry but that won’t do under any circumstances. Our vows are quite firm in these matters. There can be no compromise.”
The helpful doctor promised to try his best once more.
As I put the phone down, Swamishri asked me about the operation arrangements. I explained about the anesthesia and the female nurses.
“What did you say?” asked Swamishri.
“I said that it won’t do – even if you are under anesthesia.”
Swamishri spoke emphatically, “Not even if unconscious should our rules be broken! If our rules cannot be safeguarded satisfactorily, then I don’t want the operation done here.”
Swamishri knew well that if the operation was postponed any longer, he could end up losing his sight for good. But he would rather forsake his eyes than flout the command of Shriji Maharaj.
Here, I remembered one of Muktanand Swami’s kirtan line: ‘Niṣhkāmī te Nārāyaṇ rūp chhe...’ Shriji Maharaj writes in Vachanamrut Gadhada II-61, “A renunciant who, despite encountering wealth and women in his travels to other regions, remains unaffected and continues to firmly adhere to all of his niyams, is considered to be great among all renunciants.”
