Chapter 10

Vibhūti-Yoga

Shlok 10.1

Shrī Bhagwān said

bhūya eva mahābāho shruṇu me paramam vachaha;

yatte’ham prīyamāṇāya vakshyāmi hitakāmyayā.

O Arjun! With a desire to benefit you, I will repeatedly reveal my supreme words to you, who is pleased to hear them. Listen.

Shlok 10.2

na me viduh suragaṇāh prabhavam na maharshayaha;

ahamādirhi devānām maharshīṇām cha sarvashaha.

The gods and great sages do not realize my magnificence because I am, in all ways, the eternal cause of the gods and great sages.

Shlok 10.3

yo māmajamanādim cha vetti lokamaheshwaram;

asammūḍhah sa martyeshu sarvapāpaih pramuchyate.

One who knows me as unborn, eternal, and the world’s sovereign, they amongst mortals are without delusion and are freed from all wrongdoing.

Shlok 10.4-5

buddhirjnānamasammohah kshamā satyam damah shamaha;

sukham duhkham bhavo’bhāvo bhayam chā’bhayameva cha.

ahinsā samatā tushṭistapo dānam yasho’yashaha;

bhavanti bhāvā bhūtānām matta eva pruthagvidhāhā.

Intellect, knowledge, disillusionment, forgiveness, truthfulness, control of the senses, reign over the mind, pleasure, pain, creation, nonexistence, fear, fearlessness, non-violence, equanimity, contentment, austerity, charity, fame, and infamy—these different states of beings are caused only by me.

Shlok 10.6

maharshayah sapta pūrve chatvāro manavastathā;

madbhāvā mānasā jātā yeshām loka imāh prajāhā.

In the past, the seven great sages, who were born from Brahmā’s mind, and the four manus,[65] from whom these beings of the world are born, originated from me.

Shlok 10.7

etām vibhūtim yogam cha mama yo vetti tattvataha;

so’vikampena yogena yujyate nā’tra sanshayaha.

One who thoroughly realizes this magnificence of mine and my yoga comes to possess unwavering yoga. There is no doubt about this.

Shlok 10.8

iti matvā bhajante mām budhā bhāvasamanvitāhā.

I am the creator of all things, and all things proceed by my wishes. Knowing me in this way, the wise offer worship to me with devotion.

Shlok 10.9

machchittā madgataprāṇā bodhayantah parasparam;

kathayantashcha mām nityam tushyanti cha ramanti cha.

Devotees who are engrossed in me, have offered their life to me, enlighten each other, and always conduct discourses become content and joyful.

Shlok 10.10

teshām satatayuktānām bhajatām prītipūrvakam;

dadāmi buddhiyogam tam yena māmupayānti te.

To those who worship me with affection and are always joined with me, I bestow to them buddhi-yoga[66]—that by which they attain me.

Shlok 10.11

teshāmevā’nukampārthamahamajnānajam tamaha;

nāshayāmyātmabhāvastho jnānadīpena bhāswatā.

Only out of compassion towards them, I, who reside within ātmabhāv,[67] destroy the darkness born from ignorance by the brilliant light of knowledge.

Shlok 10.12

Your vibhūtis[68] by which you pervade this world are truly divine. Only you can fully reveal them.

katham vidyāmaham yoginstvām sadā parichintayan;

keshu keshu cha bhāveshu chintyo’si bhagavanmayā.

O Sovereign of yoga (Krishna)! How may I, who constantly remember you, know you? And Bhagwān! Which of your forms should I reflect upon?

Shlok 10.18

vistareṇā’’tmano yogam vibhūtim cha janārdana;
